Recently, I came across a piece of news: a boy and a girl who are in a romantic relationship have different favorite celebrities. They both believe that their respective favorite celebrities are better. They often argue on social media. Later, their arguments escalated to physical fights. Both of these individuals are very passionate celebrity fans. In China, what kind of things do celebrity fans do? Why do people enjoy being fans? Today, let’s discuss the topic of celebrity fandom in Chinese!

Many people have favorite celebrities. Celebrities refer to famous individuals who are well-known. These individuals are usually actors, singers, and so on. To many people, they shine as brightly as stars, hence we call them “míngxīng明星” (míngxīng), which literally means “bright stars.” These celebrities have numerous fans. If some fans are particularly devoted to a certain celebrity and frequently spend money on them, we can also call them “zhuīxīngzú追星族” (zhuī xīng zú), which translates to “celebrity-chasing tribe.”

What do celebrity fans do to chase their idols? They generally spend money on their idols. For instance, they might watch movies featuring their favorite celebrities or purchase songs sung by them. If a celebrity travels by plane to a certain location for work, they will go to the airport to welcome them. Sometimes, we might see in the news that a celebrity has a lot of fans causing congestion at the airport due to their arrivals. They also engage in “yìngyuán应援” (yìngyuán), which originally comes from Japanese and means wearing the same clothes at a celebrity’s concert or event to show support and cheer for them. If a celebrity endorses a product, celebrity fans will also buy a lot of that product.

Why are fans so devoted to chasing celebrities? The term “shàngtóu上头” (shàngtóu) is used online to describe being crazy or deeply obsessed with someone or something. For example, we might say, “Wow! His singing is really amazing! I’m so ‘shàngtóu上头’!” Of course, there’s also the opposite, “xià下tóu头” (xiàtóu), which means no longer liking someone or something. For example, we might say, “I used to really like him, but yesterday I saw him kick a stray cat, and I immediately went ‘xià下tóu头’.” When we chase celebrities, why do we become so ‘shàngtóu上头’? I think celebrity chasing is actually about chasing ourselves, and perhaps this celebrity represents our perfect imagination.

However, excessively chasing celebrities isn’t a good thing either. Some fans might insult others who don’t like the same celebrity, and even resort to online bullying on social media. Many people have been subjected to insults and online harassment from fans simply for making negative comments about celebrities. I believe this is very harmful, as we should allow for different opinions and not use online violence to hurt others.
